Millions in funding will enhance Norfolk’s cycleways and footpaths, supporting projects in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.

Leaders state that it’s too early to plan the rest. They are considering assisting a stalled project in Norwich. This funding is provided by Active Travel England, a government agency sourcing from a national pot of £291 million.
Officials emphasize the health benefits of walking and cycling. Graham Plant, responsible for roads and transport, discussed the new funding. He stated that the money builds on past work, aiming for simpler and safer travel methods.
Gorleston’s £500,000 project includes cycles and new crossings. Great Yarmouth’s Jellicoe Road plans faced challenges due to parking loss concerns.
Norwich’s Mile Cross Road project stalled, requiring £850,000 for slower speed limits. The council lacked the necessary funds to complete it. However, the terms of the new funds must be reviewed before any commitments are made.
Chris Boardman, the National Active Travel commissioner, highlighted the importance of simple, safe travel. He emphasized that this improves health and the economy. It also supports environmental goals by achieving net zero emissions.
