Hey, guess what’s happening in North Ayrshire? They need more foster carers. They asked people to think about helping out.

Let me tell you what one foster carer said. Stewart McConnell talked with Jackie and Allan Donlon. They live in Irvine and foster kids.

Jackie and Allan started with short-term care. Now, they offer permanent care. They also provide respite care when needed. Allan, their son, and his wife help. Jackie’s sister gives daily support. A support worker visits from the Family Placement Team, and attending carer support groups is helpful, too.

Jackie and Allan wanted to give more to kids. Allan left the Armed Forces nineteen years ago. That’s when they considered fostering. They have been fostering for eighteen years this August! They have cared for eighteen children in total.

The most rewarding thing is seeing kids grow. They make bonds and support them; the kids become like family to them. They cared for children from one day old to teens. Some stayed one night, others stayed for eleven years.

Jackie and Allan have two kids of their own. Jamie is their 34-year-old son, and Tamara is their 15-year-old daughter.

They recommend fostering to other people. They love helping kids, and the children bring joy and laughter every day. The good things outweigh the bad, they say.

You need to be loving and caring as a carer. Show commitment and be supportive, and be open-minded and adapt to change.

Getting kids the support they need can be hard, but making sure children flourish matters most. It appears that is their main focus.
