Starmer announces a judge-led statutory inquiry into the Nottingham attacks, fulfilling a promise to victims’ families.

Sir Keir Starmer said the probe would examine various agencies. He met with the families at Number 10. It was an emotional meeting, he added.
Valdo Calocane killed three people in Nottingham back in June 2023. The victims were Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar. Ian Coates was also killed by him. Calocane also tried to kill three others.
In January 2024, Calocane received an indefinite hospital order. He admitted manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. He also admitted attempted murder charges.
The Prime Minister wants a comprehensive review of the case. Only focusing on one part would fail. He wants to do justice to the victims.
A retired judge will be picked for the inquiry. Sir Keir stated the process will begin after the appointment.
The families wanted a statutory inquiry. This forces witnesses to give evidence. Sir Keir thinks this is essential for accountability.
The Prime Minister knows the decision took a while. The Health Secretary and Home Secretary were present. The Attorney General was there too.
Sir Keir opened the meeting with a promise kept. He said they looked at everything carefully. He announced a judge-led inquiry finally and confirmed it will be a statutory inquiry.
NHS England released a report about Calocane’s mental health care. Their report revealed his care was not always sufficient. He needed more care.
