Oaklands in St Albans attracts many families. Good state schools are a big reason. Parents often move to get their kids in, coming from London or other parts of St Albans.

The area offers easy access to local amenities. Hatfield Road boasts a parade of shops, including a barber and a convenience store. Wong’s, a popular fish and chip shop, is nearby along with a Chinese takeaway.

Chill @ Chilli’s, an Indian spot, receives positive feedback, with locals praising its authentic Keralan food. Fleetville shops, including Morrisons, are conveniently close, as are The Quadrant shops in Marshalswick.

The Speckled Hen pub, a family-friendly spot on Hatfield Road, is well-liked. It serves classic dishes such as steak and burgers, as well as bangers and mash.

Longacres Park, situated across Hatfield Road, features a playing field and playgrounds. The Alban Way, ideal for walking and cycling, passes by the park connecting St Albans with Hatfield.

Oaklands is primarily composed of family homes. Most of these are detached or semi-detached houses constructed in the last century. Wynches Farm Drive is a residential area located near The Speckled Hen and the Hatfield Road shops.

The area was once part of the Winches Farm property. The main house, Winches Farm, which still exists on Kay Walk, is Grade II listed. Kingsbury Gardens is a more recent development situated on the old Beaumont School field.

Oaklands Grange, a relatively new development off Sandpit Lane, comprises 348 homes. These homes offer two to five bedrooms. Currently, there are no homes on the market within Oaklands Grange.

The station is over half an hour’s walk away, but is easily accessible by cycle or bus. Hatfield Road provides regular bus routes. Its near the M25, M1, and A1(M) benefits drivers heading north or south.

Oaklands schools are highly sought after. St Albans already enjoys a reputation for great schools. Beaumont School achieved top marks in 2014, demonstrating effective preparation of pupils for the future. Behavior was described as “exemplary” both inside and outside the classroom.

Nicholas Breakspear is another option, a Catholic secondary school. Ofsted rated them ‘outstanding’ in 2023. However, Oakwood Primary “requires improvement,” according to Ofsted’s 2023 report.

Oaklands College provides further education opportunities. A-levels and BTECs are offered there, along with apprenticeships and adult learning programs. The college also has specialized programs designed to support students with particular needs.
