Midlothian planners approved a mill restoration. The mill stands on a farmhouse property, and people called it a “folly.”

John Ferguson, a businessman, sought permission to fix the old ruin. It sits at Elginhaugh House near Dalkeith and is part of his home’s extension.

The old mill will become extra space, featuring a gym and bedrooms. They span three floors with a glass roof.

Planners say the glass roof is modern but honors the mill’s history. It allows the mill’s reuse and celebrates its past as a working mill.

Historic Environment Scotland had no issues and liked the idea of re-using it. They think it works well as living space.

The report said they have no concerns, as the plan includes wall repairs. It also involves updates and smart changes.

The mill lost its roof earlier and is now an expensive ornament. It serves no real purpose in its current state.

Restoring the mill won’t bring it back to its original function, but it will be fixed sensitively. It will be well-kept and used.

Ferguson asked for permission for house changes and sought consent to restore the ruin. Both requests were granted.

The house saw several additions before, and no one objected to the new work this time.

The planners approved the project because the changes complement the site. They enhance the listed buildings, the landscape, and helps the special landscape area.

The house extensions are fine and won’t negatively affect neighbors. This is because of their design and location.
