Katy Measey avoids jail for arson at Oxford City Council property. She receives a community order and must pay compensation.
The 44-year-old, from Wood Farm in Oxford, admitted guilt on all charges. The court ordered her to a 12-month community order.
The court heard about an incident from February 24, 2023, where Measey set a fire at an Oxford City Council property on Grunsell Close. The cause of the fire remains unclear. She also damaged a window and flower pots owned by Angelo Casserttari, with the flower pots alone worth about £180.
Measey assaulted police officers PC Pinker and PC Rimen and used racially charged language toward PC Mungal. The court found this language racially aggravated.
Besides the community order, she must get mental health treatment for six months and needs up to 10 days of rehabilitation. She must also pay the officers compensation. She must pay PCs Mungal and Pinker £50 each, totaling £100, and pay PC Rimen £100 separately. The court fined her £107 and prioritized compensation over other costs.
This case follows a similar arson case where Brandon Gillas was jailed for setting his mattress on fire in a shared living space in Wallingford last month. Gillas, 25, used a lighter for the arson in Chalmore House, a facility supporting adults with mental health issues on Reading Road, and claimed the fire started by accident.
Staff found a lighter on his bed, though he did not smoke, after Gillas said he tried to put the fire out with vodka and Coke. He received a 12-month jail sentence and has been in custody since June prior year.
In September last year, a woman avoided jail after setting a felt tree on fire in her Abingdon living room.
