Two Victorian buildings in Paignton often get missed: Baileys Hotel and the Emporium. You can find Baileys Hotel in Station Square. The Emporium sits at Winner Street’s junction with Totnes Road.

The Bailey family built Baileys Hotel in 1894 to house the many new train travelers. It was one of the first sights for visitors. Couldrey and Bridgeman designed the beautiful hotel, its design meant to look impressive and welcoming to all. Some considered it grander than the Gerston Hotel.

Baileys Hotel still stands, but time has taken its toll. It once housed the Tropicana Nightclub; Nicks Repository and other clubs were there too. The upper floors became offices, and at one time, a hairdresser also occupied space. Now, it’s in disrepair, sadly.

People have suggested ways to revamp it, including ideas like flats, a work hub, and shops. Meanwhile, the building weakens and looks rather sore. Locals hope the facade stays intact because it was once iconic.

The Emporium is doing okay, luckily. Unlike the hotel, it houses several shops and is in much better shape. The Bailey family also constructed this building, and it likely sold blue china from Paignton Harbour. Henry Bailey and his wife might have run this place.

Over time, the Emporium hosted numerous businesses: a butcher, confectioner, and carpenter were there. Plus, a snooker club and a funeral director used it. Today, the Emporium still looks grand, and its appearance closely resembles the original design, which Couldrey and Bridgeman designed.

Old photos of the Emporium are hard to find. A recent photo reveals original design features. These features define the designers’ style.
