Traders launch petition to stop closure of CPS Centre in Culcheth over fire safety concerns, despite fire service’s view.

Shivat Haminim Capital Ltd, which bought the shop in 2021, cited fire safety as a concern. This, they stated, was the reason for evicting the shops on the first floor. The eviction letter specifically mentioned a report indicating that fire safety work was vital and needed to happen quickly to avoid danger.
However, the fire service holds a different view, suggesting that the necessary work can be carried out without resorting to evictions.
Business owners have started a petition on Change.org to protest the company’s decision, as the CPS Centre is located in Culcheth on Common Lane. Kate Chilton explained that the petition aims to save the center, emphasizing that landlords will close it if action isn’t taken; the center is home to many shops, including a popular cafe and hairdressers.
Other shops have thrived there for over twenty years, demonstrating how crucial these businesses are to the community. The impending closure threatens the community’s identity, especially since they received only 28 days’ notice.
This situation presents hardship for both business owners and customers who rely on the shops’ services. The closure threatens livelihoods and will harm the community as a whole. They are asking for assistance in saving this vital community hub, encouraging people to sign and share the petition to prevent the closure.
Ayesha Khan, owner of Sundial Terrace Coffee Shop for 27 years, is devastated by the news. She shared that people are crying, and she can feel their pain. She also stated that finding another space big enough or empty in the village is impossible, making this a very stressful situation for shop owners.
Charlotte Nichols, MP, addressed the issue in Parliament during Prime Minister’s Questions. She stated that the owners have not listened to tenant concerns and have failed to negotiate a solution. She asked if the PM shared her concerns and wanted to know what plans existed to protect these independent businesses.
Sir Keir Starmer thanked the MP for raising the issue and assured her of a meeting to discuss helping the businesses. He promised to set up a meeting with the appropriate minister.
The CPS Centre was previously asked for a comment but did not respond at that time.
