Investigation launched after a man’s death following police response to a reported child assault in South Norwood.

Police entered a home and found a 45-year-old man. He was upset and fought the officers. He then had a medical problem. They held him while waiting for help.
Paramedics were called to the scene. He got worse on the way to the ambulance. He later died at the hospital. His family has been told about his death.
Andy Brittain is overseeing the police response. He said they support the man’s family. The IOPC will investigate the incident now. The police standards unit knows about it too.
Police must report deaths after contact with them. Brittain said locals want reassurance. The IOPC investigation will provide outside review.
Brittain recognizes the impact on his officers. They answered a call about a child’s safety. They faced a tough scene when they arrived there. Police never wish for deaths. They will get support.
