A new report indicates prisons are facing a crisis. Past governments prioritized appearing tough on crime, which led to issues plaguing the system today. Longer jail terms overwhelmed the prison system, though crime incidents have decreased since the mid-1990s.

David Gauke led the review as chair. He stated politicians previously worked in isolation, increasing sentences recklessly without considering the ramifications for the wider system. Gauke believes this approach ultimately fails victims. It does not deliver true justice.

RJ4All in Rotherhithe welcomed the report. Professor Theo Gavrielides, who directs RJ4All, said they had foreseen these issues. He predicted the system would inevitably collapse.

Charlie Taylor inspected prisons in May 2024. He issued an urgent notification regarding Wandsworth prison, with reports describing it as overcrowded and highlighting a rise in violence among inmates. England and Wales have high prison rates, ranking among the highest in Western Europe.

Recalling offenders on license is a key reason for the increase in prison population. Numbers rose dramatically from under 100 in 1993 to nearly 13,000 by December 2024. Gauke insists we must publicly discuss the prison system. We must discuss who is incarcerated and for how long.

Punishment is central to criminal justice, but it is not the only goal, nor is prison the only type of punishment. RJ4All aids 350 individuals monthly, offering food banks and digital support. They also host job and education workshops where victims and ex-offenders meet daily.

Interestingly, RJ4All’s research uncovered a significant finding. Food and housing security could drastically reduce reoffending, potentially by up to 30 percent. Rehabilitation combined with mental health support also helped. It improved long-term outcomes for people.

Professor Gavrielides views restorative justice in a positive light. He emphasizes that it is not a “soft” option. It can effectively reduce re-offending rates. Victim satisfaction can also significantly increase, and communities become more empowered.

Gavrielides sees this review as a crucial opportunity. He calls it a wake-up call for the government, stating that they are ready to help and support reforms. They will fund community aid programs. These programs enable real alternatives, and the Sentencing Review will soon be suggesting reforms.
