Public Urged to Help After Abuse of Wrexham Hospital Employees
One guy, Dafydd Harper, is 42. He got a conditional discharge. The court also ordered him to pay compensation. He was abusive and kicked a door. The kick broke a window pane at Heddfan Unit.
Another man, Cameron Rushton, is 31. He was fined for racial abuse. He yelled stuff at two security guards. His behavior was “aggressive and abusive” in general.
Geoff Ryall-Harvey spoke about the cases. He works for Llais in North Wales. Llais replaced the old health council. He thinks the abuse is very bad, and the racial element is especially worrying.
He says the NHS relies on overseas staff. They bring skills and help a lot. People make bad choices, he knows. Stress happens, but abuse is wrong. Some staff leave due to abuse issues.
Ryall-Harvey thinks this affects everyone. These healthcare skills are scarce, and finding replacements is really hard. We can’t afford people leaving those jobs. Services suffer when abuse is common. Nobody should face abuse at work.
Harper’s actions forced an evacuation. Staff moved patients from a common area. Ryall-Harvey said this is disturbing for patients. They’re already sick and stressed. People should really think before acting out.
Aggression stops staff from helping people. It prevents them from calming situations down. Carol Shillabeer also commented on this. She leads the local health board, and patient and staff safety is its top priority.
She says they won’t tolerate abuse. They’ll use the law to stop it. They will do this if it is necessary.
