Grace Vater, 22, died after falling off a quad bike. Her boyfriend, Alex Evans, fled the scene and was jailed for two years.

Passers-by quickly rushed over and helped her. Evans, her boyfriend, fled the scene. Grace was airlifted to a hospital. Sadly, she died two days later on Christmas Day in 2023.
Angela Vater is Grace’s mother. She spoke out in court and described Evans’s behaviour as cowardly. He was jailed for two years. Angela said Alex and Grace were together and lived as a family. She now feels incredible anger and upset.
Angela said Grace was kind to everyone. Her death has left a huge hole. Life will never be the same without her. She cannot believe Grace is gone.
The court learned Evans used the quad bike for farming. Grace would often ride on the back rack, which was not for passengers. This made it dangerously overloaded.
Evans was also banned from driving, a ban in place two months prior. Police arrested him after he fled the scene. They found the quad bike hidden at his home.
Evans was banned for drug driving in April 2023, and he hid the ban from his employer. His lawyer spoke about “inherent risk”. He said Evans will live with the tragedy.
Evans admitted causing death by dangerous driving. He also drove while disqualified and uninsured. He received a six-year driving ban.
