A slate company wants to expand its quarry. This expansion affects lorry traffic through Corris. They submitted their plans in December. The plan extends slate work for up to 16 years, processing ten thousand tons yearly.

The work means more trucks will leave the quarry. Twelve to fifteen big trucks will drive through Corris to the A487 six days a week. Some Corris residents worry about this increase. Another plan also moves timber through Corris.

The slate company, David Meredith and Sons Ltd, says they will replace traffic. Their plan will not add to current traffic. They now have two loads a day, which means ten lorries a week.

A resident named Wayne Colquhoun took pictures when a lorry got stuck on Corris’ main road. Wayne, who lives on the Corris main road, said Corris could get very congested and also fears safety issues for Corris.

Houses on Bridge Street open right onto the road, and he fears that a child could be hurt. Gwynedd Councillor John Pughe Roberts spoke up, stating that comparing the two plans misleads people. Slate mining helps Corris.

Roberts stated it has created local work for years, and he says this work should continue. Slate lorries differ from timber wagons; slate lorries are lighter and smaller. The scenarios do not compare, he explained.

Robert and David from the slate firm spoke and said they know of no safety concerns and haven’t seen building damage in 20 years. They did not know about the forestry plan. This permission helps them find more slate, which improves the mill work. More pieces might even mean hiring more people.
