A woman died in a Reading flat fire on Whitley Wood Road. Emergency services responded, but were unable to save her.

Firefighters rescued a woman from the building and diligently worked to extinguish the flames. Sadly, despite paramedics’ efforts, the woman died at the flat. Fire stations from Caversham Road, Wokingham Road, and Whitley Wood were dispatched to the incident.
Police are currently investigating the fire’s cause to determine the sequence of events. Detective Inspector Sally Russell commented on the tragic event. The police have notified the woman’s family and are providing them with support.
At this time, the incident is not considered suspicious. The Berkshire coroner will receive a report. Neighbors identified the woman as Susie, believed to be in her sixties.
The fire rescue team expressed their condolences, stating their thoughts are with her loved ones. Fire crews remained at the scene for approximately 98 minutes. A thorough investigation will be conducted to ascertain the fire’s origin, which remained contained to the single flat.
Following the fire, reporters spoke with residents. Maria, a resident, described the experience as traumatic. She recounted that the council had relocated her to the flat following an injury. Maria woke up to the sound of sirens and commotion, and she couldn’t believe what she was seeing.
She noted that the area is usually quiet. Residents recalled hearing Susie return home late. Maria shared that Susie lived alone and smoked. Residents typically look out for one another, which is why this incident has profoundly shaken them.
The fact that alarms did not activate in other flats has raised concerns for Maria about fire safety. Maria is now contemplating her own safety and escape routes, noting the multiple locks on the doors and the triple-glazed windows, which could complicate a quick exit.
