Reading’s road resurfacing project continues with £4M focused on major roads. Closures & detours are expected for faster, safer work.

The major roads program costs £4 million. It is part of a larger £8 million investment, which also covers smaller, residential streets. Workers resurfaced over 100 streets this past spring.
The council says roads have improved and pothole reports dropped thirty-nine percent, falling from 1,913 to 1,168 in recent years. Over 700 roads got new surfaces since 2019, after a prior £9 million upgrade finished. Then, this current £8 million job started. “Good” residential roads rose greatly, going from 35% to 85%.
Road closures will happen to make work faster and safer. Parking will be temporarily banned to prevent parking during road work.
Nearby residents and businesses get notices and alerts about the coming work. Expect closure signs and mailed letters.
Detours will guide residents, and they can still access homes if it’s safe. Bus routes will also change temporarily.
