London Colney residents are petitioning to reclaim their village club after it was sold and redeveloped for housing.

In 2016, new trustees took over the club. Soon after, the land was sold to a company. In 2018, a plan arose including housing and a new clubhouse. They wanted to demolish the old buildings, but that plan was turned down.
In 2020, the developer tried again with a similar application which was also refused. During this time, the club’s popularity dropped. It fell into disrepair and closed during lockdown. Another proposal was submitted then.
A plan got approved in October 2024, including homes, a club, and parking. This happened despite eighteen objections. The new clubhouse will have two stories. It will include a function room, bar, and kitchen in 103m squared, and a one-bedroom flat is also planned.
Three houses will sit north of the site, and five more houses will be at the back. The applicant says the plan is well-considered. They think it would make good use of the property and is a sensible housing solution.
The developer says the site needs updated facilities to help serve the residents better. The nursery’s future is unclear right now, as the proposal lacks a new nursery building. Archaeological work started on the site, and residents worry about running out of time.
The petition has over 200 signatures already. The petition author made a statement that the land was more than just a club; it was a space for the nursery. Private hands now own the land, and community spirit has eroded because of this.
Charles Morris left the land for community use. The petition aims to restore the land and return the club back to the community. People worry that there will be fewer parking spaces.
London Colney Village Club Ltd released a letter stating that they saved the club. This investment creates a vibrant hub where residents can gather and socialize. They can take part in workshops and programs.
Trustees acted on legal advice given, which ensured compliance with their duties. The new clubhouse will open in a few years.
