Louise, a Richmond mom, wanted a local bike park because she had to travel far for her kids to bike. So, Louise started a group with locals and businesses, hoping to make a bike park happen.

The group secured support from community leaders and found a good spot for the bike park, located between Green Howards Road and Whashton Road. A crowdfunding effort raised over £2,500, which helped launch the project.

Submitting the planning application was encouraging, according to Louise. Community support was essential, with significant contributions from local and biking communities, along with a small, dedicated volunteer team who brought diverse skills to the project.

Louise found inspiration in the Devil’s Toenail bike park. The committee is now seeking funding for the build and will set up a pledging program for help. People can offer labor, materials, funds, or tools.

The community can help build the park, although some construction might go to a contractor. It all hinges on pledges and grant money. The park will feature varied routes suitable for all riders, with skill levels carefully considered in the design.

Lord Ronaldshay and Zetland Estates provided a lease for the 4.25-acre site, which is perfect because of its slope. Given that Richmond is hilly, a gentle slope was particularly important.

The park’s location near Rufus Wood and Just the Job Big Build, other community projects, could draw people to all three initiatives. The park will be free, with entrances at either end of the field.

Most visitors will walk or bike there, but drivers can park near the old racecourse. Plans are in place to expand the parking area, providing additional parking space.
