A diesel spill from a bus depot has polluted the River Wandle, prompting an urgent investigation.

Sadly, they found wildlife covered in oil. The Wandle is home to many fish, like brown trout. The Environment Agency quickly sent people to help, working with the fire brigade to stop the leak. Now, they’re gathering proof and checking how extensive the damage is.
The Environment Agency leads the cleanup effort, working with several groups including Thames Water and the RSPB. Years ago, the Wandle was very polluted and almost “dead,” ecologically speaking. People worked hard to restore it and make it healthy again.
One MP called the spill an “environmental disaster.” Another MP gave details about stopping the leak, saying a delivery caused the tank to overflow. The fire brigade plugged the hole, and Thames Water is soaking up the diesel.
The council knows about the spill’s effect and is especially aware that Watermeads Nature Reserve has been affected. Some animals there are covered in oil. People want to find out who caused this, but the immediate focus is to limit the damage.
