King Charles and Camilla visit Middlesbrough on Thursday, February 13th. No head of state has visited since Queen Elizabeth II in 1993. This is Charles’ first North East visit as King; he last visited the area in April 2022 during a trip that included Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle.

King Charles was diagnosed with cancer last year and paused his public duties briefly. He began treatment in February for an undisclosed cancer and returned to public duties in April. His treatment is progressing well, and he’s now doing official events in Teesside.

Their Majesties will be in Middlesbrough this Thursday, visiting Centre Square, off Albert Road. Centre Square faces the Cleveland Centre and is near the Town Hall and MIMA art museum. The event in Centre Square runs from 1 PM to 3 PM during which the King and Queen will walk through the square.

They will meet local officials during their visit and the public can watch. Mike McGrother will lead musical performances including his choir and band. The music celebrates the Middlesbrough area, and the performance has three parts titled Erimus, Infant Hercules, Infinite Hercules.

Middlesbrough Council and Teesside University organized the event to entertain the crowd before the royals arrive. The King and Queen have other engagements planned, but details about these are confidential. Only the Centre Square event details are public now.

King Charles last visited the North East in April 2022 when he visited Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle. He spoke to farmers and saw Highland Cattle and had tea and cake at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart. Charles also opened Humbleton Park and visited Kromek’s factory, touring the labs and production areas. He and Queen Letizia opened a gallery in Auckland Castle.

Queen Camilla visited RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire last September, meeting families growing produce after they transformed part of the base into a smallholding. King Charles’ visit is a first since his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, opened Pallister Park in 1993.

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke shared his excitement and that people are excited about the visit. There is a visible police presence to keep people safe, with limited bag sizes and event staff conducting searches. Ask staff for any needed support.

Report anything uncomfortable to security staff or police and contact events@middlesbrough.gov.uk before February 11 to reserve a wheelchair area for wheelchair users and carers; places are limited.
