Robert Brechin, a pensioner, got caught. He’s 72. Brechin admitted to sexually assaulting and raping a child. He pleaded guilty last month. He said his crimes had “no impact.” This came out at his sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow.

The judge, Lord Matthews, jailed him for seven years, four months. It was reduced from eleven years because Brechin confessed. The abuse happened from January 2021 to September 2023 in Kilbirnie. The prosecutor, Neil McCulloch, said she was “vulnerable.”

The girl met Brechin and liked his dog. They walked together, and Brechin first attacked her by a canal path. She “did not know how to react,” and the abuse kept happening. The girl said it happened “a lot,” and he took photos of her undressed too.

Brechin once felt “guilty” due to her age and told her to stay quiet, saying he’d “get into trouble.” In 2023, she told her teacher, and the police were alerted. Brechin, from Saltcoats, got arrested but stayed silent with the police.

Gillian Ross KC defended Brechin at the hearing. She said a report showed he lacked empathy, and the writer said he felt no impact happened. However, he said he now understands and realizes there would be some impact.

The judge made a non-harassment order, meaning Brechin can’t contact the victim. He also went on the sex offenders register; both last indefinitely. The judge said she can’t concentrate now and feels “sad and depressed,” telling Brechin he abused her. The victim told her teacher about it all.
