Sam Barrett helps new dads. Many UK men face mental health issues after the baby’s birth. This lasts through the first year. About ten percent of men get depressed. Stigma and bonding issues contribute.

Sam works for Dad Matters now. The group is in Blackburn with Darwen. He guides new fathers through birth and shares parenting insights. Sam’s own son inspired him.

Sam and his partner separated then. They worked out co-parenting later. When his son visited, Sam felt lost and struggled finding activities to do. The separation was also very hard.

Becoming a dad changed Sam’s life. Dads need support and should ask for it. Sam overcame his struggles with fatherhood and provides help through outreach programs. These programs are at homes or centers and dads can also get peer support.

He meets dads needing support. These dads often come via bereavement services, where they have coffee and share. He connects them with other fathers too. He hopes they feel comfortable opening up.

The charity assists fathers with young kids, up to age two. They say no question is too simple and help with diaper changes if needed. They support any dad who needs it.

Dads often get overlooked, Sam says. Stepping into the role can be hard. Many dads don’t know they can seek help. Sam wants to spread the word that support is crucial in the community.

He seeks to get men to talk more. Sadly, many men die by suicide during the perinatal period. Dads can refer themselves for help. Dad Matters supports anyone who needs it.
