A toilet block might become a café and sports office. Councillors will soon decide on these plans. Yellowave wants to change the old bowls pavilion. It’s at Hove Beach Park on Western Esplanade.

The Planning Committee will discuss the plan. This happens next Wednesday, March 5th. The toilet block is quite old; it’s an art deco building from the 1920s. It was for the Kingsway Bowls Club originally.

Heritage officers don’t mind the change. They believe it will help the area. The plan includes taking down an accessible toilet. Yellowave already runs a beach spot in Kemp Town. They focus on healthy, inclusive sports for everyone.

Their business aims for community participation, all year. This includes families, schools, and keen athletes. People have shown support, with 111 comments. They note the toilets are not in good condition, and supporters also like the new sports facilities. The wider area should also get better.

One supporter praised Yellowave’s impact on Brighton’s beach. They said Yellowave creates communities, and they think expansion to Hove is a great idea. Another supporter likes the idea of beach sports. They said skate parks are creating a good vibe.

However, 91 people have raised objections. They worry about a proposed fence, for example. Over-commercialization also causes concern, and the construction of a storage building concerns them too.

One person objects to fencing public space. They think it’s for commercial gain mostly. They said the area is a public right of way. Denying access with high fences is unacceptable to them. Public space access must be preserved.

Another person said over-development occurred recently. They don’t want any further over-development. They want to keep traditional culture intact. The Planning Committee meets at Hove Town Hall. The meeting starts at 2pm next Wednesday. You can watch it online.
