Dumfries and Galloway sees a rise in serious assaults and attempted murder cases, with a significant jump from previous years.

The report comes from Scotland’s chief statistician. For 2024, there were 108 such cases. This is a 23% jump from 2023’s 88 cases, and a big 59% rise since 2020.
Housebreaking also went up, from 179 to 222. Sexual offenses increased too. They’re up 13% since 2020. That’s concerning, right?
Colin Smyth, a local MSP, commented on the rise. He thinks the government needs to help police and properly fund them to fight crime. He also mentioned the police do great work but they need resources for growing issues.
Smyth added policing isn’t the only solution. He said economic issues can fuel crime sometimes. Poverty and job losses can play a part. He wants the government to stop cuts and thinks it needs to support services for communities. This includes policing and social programs.
