Cove Group buys historic Shepton Mallet Prison, preserving it as a heritage attraction after demolition plans.

The prison dates back to 1610, and this purchase means it can now be preserved as a potential heritage attraction. People wanted it to stay open after the closure announcement.
Cove Group’s CEO stated they lacked support earlier, although they had been negotiating with City & Country. The prison stayed open during this negotiation period. However, plans arose to demolish part of it and construct luxury flats and townhouses instead.
A deal finalized in August 2024 secured the prison’s future. The Cove Group CEO considered it a personal mission, mentioning that securing its future had taken years. The group aims to ensure not only the prison’s survival but its prosperity.
They also want it to thrive as a tourist site, emphasizing that it represents British history. They can invest in it properly now, as his team worked hard amidst challenges to develop it further for all.
Since Cove Group acquired it, the prison has hosted events like ghost hunts and escape rooms, also offering seasonal activities. Further event details will be released soon.
