A new map shows UK speeding hotspots on 30mph roads. Some folks drove over 90mph in these 30mph zones, which police chiefs are calling reckless and selfish. Around half of UK police caught drivers exceeding 90mph.

The data shows speeding is a big factor in fatal crashes. The RAC gathered info from 40 police forces. South Yorkshire saw the highest speed: 122mph in a 30mph area. You can view each area on the map.

Sussex Police saw 113mph on a 30mph road. Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire had 112mph. Most forces caught drivers at 60mph in 30mph zones, while some drivers sped in 20mph zones, too.

One driver did 88mph in North Wales, and another reached 84mph in the City of London. The M1 in Leicestershire saw 167mph on a 70mph limit.

RAC says this data shows dangerous actions. These drivers put others at risk by speeding, thankfully, police caught these speeding drivers. Excessive speeds are not okay, they noted, and some speeds happened at night, but not always.

Four people die daily on UK roads, on average, and speeding is a factor in many of those deaths. In 2023, 1,624 people died on the roads. Almost 30,000 people were killed or badly hurt overall.

Speeding was a factor in 58% of fatal road accidents, and 43% of all collisions. Excess speed led to 888 deaths in 2023. Speed contributed to almost 40,000 crashes total.

Official figures show over 130,000 casualties from road incidents. The Department for Transport provided these figures, and cars were involved in 45% of the crashes. Police say extreme speeds are deliberate actions.

Speed limits consider road conditions and safety. Driving above set limits is reckless, and everyone should keep roads safe for all. A few mph can mean life or death, experts suggest speed limit is not a target.
