Mary Jane Allan, with prior shoplifting convictions, is jailed for attacking a man with a meat cleaver at his home.

Amber Walker explained what happened. Allan visited a man’s home last September. They knew each other, Walker said, and they talked, but things got bad. Allan then wanted to leave.
Walker stated Allan grabbed a meat cleaver. She hit the man’s head with it. The man felt pain and had headaches. This lasted four or five days. He did not see a doctor, so they had no injury proof.
Allan, age 37, admitted her guilt; she caused actual bodily harm. The court jailed her for ten months.
The court heard about Allan’s criminal past. Mostly, she shoplifted. These crimes were acts of dishonesty.
Judge Sean Morris spoke to Allan directly. He said she now is not using drugs. He warned her about drugs and shoplifting. He also warned her against hurting people, and urged her to change her life.
Laura Addy spoke for Allan. She said drugs caused this crime, and Allan’s “friends” also played a role. Addy said Allan only had herself to blame.
Addy said drugs led to Allan’s crimes. Allan knew this herself. Her health improved in custody, Addy said. “She is a lot cleaner,” said Addy.
Addy said Allan might stay drug-free. If she stays clean, she might succeed. “She knows it won’t be easy,” Addy added.
A York judge told Allan to change before. In 2021, another judge saw her again. That judge seemed tired of seeing her in court.
