Craftivists launch ‘Just Walking Home’ project in Worcester for International Women’s Day, raising awareness and remembering victims.

Worcester Craftivists created over 200 pennants. Volunteers stitched and sewed them. The pennants remember victims; these women were abducted or murdered simply walking home.
Barbara Lowe, an organizer from the Craftivists, noted troubling times of day. Some abductions happened in broad daylight, and one teacher was attacked after school. Walking home is a constant concern.
Work from home does not always feel safe. You stay alert, unsure of threats, which is how many women feel; men may not. They focused on Sabrina Bridge’s safety, as students often walk there to reach town.
Pennants have messages like “she was walking home,” and “Just walking home” is another message. They tied them around trees and lamp posts, and Sabrina Bridge also displays the messages.
The Craftivists worked since January to make them, creating 200 pennants, maybe more, with some coming in at the last minute.
Cathy Growley thanked everyone involved, including the city and county councils, for allowing the project to happen.
The group installed art on specific objects only, avoiding roads for driver safety. They kept them off the ground to prevent trips.
The artwork stays up until next weekend. It helps Worcester mark Women’s Day.
