Towpath upgrades begin near Silsden and Kildwick, funded by multiple sources and aiming for completion by June.

The project costs £1.8 million. They are resurfacing and widening the path where possible, while new signs are also arriving. People with pushchairs should find it easier, and work is expected to last until June’s end.
Funding came from the York and North Yorkshire fund, Active Travel England in West Yorkshire, and government departments.
Last year, the Canal Trust led a consultation, collaborating with councils to gather feedback from canal users, residents, and businesses.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a historic landmark from the Industrial Revolution with ongoing boat traffic. The upgrade helps the “missing link” and improves paths along Yorkshire’s canal.
This project makes canals nicer and ensures they are open to boats while also benefiting local people and wildlife.
The upgrade significantly improves path access, and they keep investing in active travel options to promote healthier lifestyles in West Yorkshire. Their aim is to combat climate change and create a better-connected area.
Robbie Moore supported this project by lobbying for funding and meeting with the Transport Department. The funding announcement occurred last March.
