A massive sinkhole near homes in Surrey causes evacuations and panic among residents. Burst water pipes are also present.

Miri described the event as “utter panic,” resembling a scene from a TV show. Running downstairs, she heard waterfall sounds emanating from the nearby sinkhole.
Surrey declared a major incident on Tuesday, with police urging residents to evacuate quickly due to fears of explosions from exposed cables. The sinkhole swallowed a garden by Tuesday afternoon, leading to the evacuation of about 30 homes.
Miri expects to remain away for months and has moved to temporary housing. Nicola and Damian Styles were shocked after police woke them up in the middle of the night.
They quickly grabbed clothes and laptops before leaving, unsure of how long the situation would last. Kevin Boll feared the sinkhole’s size while also noting the presence of many services. He added that the sinkhole’s formation near brand new flats was unexpected.
Alan and Tracey Jones took in their family after the evacuation at midnight on Tuesday. Police evacuated their daughter, husband, and baby after the flat’s building ended up next to the hole.
Mrs. Jones described the situation as “an absolute nightmare,” fueled by fears of a gas explosion. Mr. Jones expressed his concern, noting the presence of many people and utility companies.
SES Water reported a burst water pipe and delivered water bottles to residents on Tuesday night, as residents had no running water in their homes. The Jones’ daughter showered at a friend’s home because they lacked information about the situation.
Surrey is collaborating with emergency services, utility companies, highway and district councils to protect people and property. Investigations are ongoing to fix the area and utilities.
They are asking people to stay away during the work and will provide updates as the situation changes. The council is supporting about 30 evacuated properties, and Highways has put diversions in place. They will meet to resolve the situation safely.
