Six police officers may face criminal charges now. A 20-year-old man died while in their custody. His name was Jack Higham.

Jack became very ill in February 2023. Police arrested him in Leigh, England. Reports had surfaced about a stabbing incident.

An investigation looked at possible criminal offenses. These included manslaughter and misconduct. The IOPC sent six officers to the CPS.

A police spokesperson said they cooperated fully. They helped the IOPC investigate “serious alleged offenses.”

Officers tried CPR and called for an ambulance. Sadly, Jack died at the arrest site. He became “seriously unwell,” the IOPC stated. The IOPC investigated the force used and the care Jack received when he got sick.

The six officers learned about the investigation in January 2024. The IOPC confirmed this update. An inquest began and then paused last month. The IOPC awaits more post-mortem test results.

Amanda Rowe heads engagement at the IOPC. She stated they refer cases with possible crimes. Rowe emphasized charges don’t always happen. They will now wait for the CPS decision.

The IOPC also gave notices to five other officers. These notices related to possible misconduct. It means they might not have followed police standards. The police are talking with their Federation for updating and supporting the officers.

The police force will not comment more for now. They will wait to see what the CPS decides.
