A soldier, Jaysley Beck, felt trapped by a boss, Ryan Mason. She worried he hacked her phone before her death at Larkhill Camp.

An Army report found unwelcome behavior caused her distress, and this behavior likely led to her death. Jaysley’s mom, Leighann McCready, spoke about the situation. She said her daughter felt unsafe with Mr. Mason and believed he hacked her phone.
Jaysley felt Mr. Mason was obsessive as he sent 3,600 texts in one month. She gave him emotional support because she thought he had mental health issues. The inquest showed many messages that they exchanged for three months.
Mr. Mason told Jaysley he loved her as a friend and called her “the magician” in his phone. He said she was amazing, he loved everything about her, and they were stuck together forever as friends.
Jaysley told him his feelings were too much and she wasn’t looking for a relationship. She said it was weighing her down a lot and she didn’t want to hear about his feelings.
Jaysley grew concerned about Mr. Mason and felt watched when he knew her location. She found his comments weird and bizarre and felt overwhelmed by his constant texts. She asked if he understood it was too much.
Her mom said Jaysley found him creepy, saying he was freaking her out and thought he hacked her phone. He knew where she was, even when away, and she was upset while in a hotel. She feared he tracked her and listened.
Jaysley wrote a message she never sent, saying she felt trapped in the situation. She tried to act normal at work but felt his actions were psychotic. She struggled with her mental health and needed time for herself.
Jaysley struggled with other things too, as she had just ended a relationship. Her uncle died by suicide in 2020, and she also reported a sergeant’s misconduct where he inappropriately touched her during a trip.
Jaysley slept in her car due to fear and was angry at the sergeant’s apology because he received a minor punishment. He said his door was open to her, and the inquest is still ongoing.
