Parking changes in Somerset face pushback over fees and Sunday charges. A petition and protests are planned.

A meeting happened February 24. Opposition councillors opposed the parking changes and most wanted a public discussion about it. A petition fights the “short-sighted” plans and has over 1,300 signatures so far.
Susie Thomas, a business owner, started the petition. Giles Adams, Visit Somerset’s Chair, gave a warning; he said the changes could “suffocate business.” That is pretty bad.
A protest is planned for March 1 at Croft Way in Wiveliscombe against the parking fees. Cllr Dave Mansell shared concerns of shopkeepers, and he thinks people will shop elsewhere. Out-of-town stores may get more customers.
Other towns worry about the changes, too. Cllr Diogo Rodridgues spoke about Bridgwater. Road work and fees could make things difficult.
Cllr Kathy Pearce spoke at the council meeting and she noted town centers already struggle. Online shopping provides an option, and towns must attract people. Gideon Amos, Taunton’s MP, also disagrees. He urged more talks with local stores.
The council needs to work with traders. Mr. Amos said businesses suffer already. National Insurance and rates hit them hard. It is a pretty big problem.
