South Ayrshire commemorates VE Day with events, including ceremonies, beacons, and a ‘Field of Heroes’ art installation.

The group plans several commemorative events. These will lead to a ceremony in Wellington Square. Beacons will light up across South Ayrshire too.
South Ayrshire will create a ‘Field of Heroes’ there. This art piece has 108 force silhouettes. QR codes connect each to a local war death. Young people will narrate their stories. These stories will be on YouTube to access.
See the display May 1-10 in Wellington Square. Pop-up shows bring figures to other areas. Each day features a Last Post event (7-8 PM). Local bands will play 1940s music each evening. A bugler will sound the Last Post at 8 PM.
This honors those who died during the war. VE Day is Thursday, May 8. A Town Hall event will reflect on war events. South Ayrshire’s contribution gets recognized then. They also honor those who lost their lives. The celebration includes music from performers.
A parade marches to Wellington Square afterwards. This is from the Town Hall to the war memorial there. A brief ceremony happens there for remembrance. This joins beacon lightings through South Ayrshire. It connects to a UK-wide celebration too.
The Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum adds fun. They host a shop in Ayr Auld Kirk all day. Activities are available for young visitors too. Nick Slane spoke about community involvement.
Businesses can sponsor figures in the art piece. It links past to present using donations. Students can enter a video contest. Short stories must depict people from their town. Kids can also make a poppy ‘blanket.’ This blanket decorates all the war memorials here.
VE South Ayrshire hopes for a proud event. They want communities to celebrate together. The group bridges older and younger residents. It marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day well.
