Author Russell Dumper discusses his new book, The Hero Virus, and the critical reactions at a Spalding Library event.

Russell Dumper’s new book is getting great reviews, with many reviewers and influencers praising it a lot. The Hero Virus, a novel about a pandemic where survivors gain superpowers, came out a month ago. It’s become quite popular in the online book world.
People are describing it as Contagion meets The Boys. Readers on Instagram and TikTok love the book and connect online to discuss it. Dumper recently read from his book at Spalding library. He believes the reviews have been generous so far and hopes more good feedback is on the way.
Dumper’s first book, Britannia Rises, came out in 2023 and earned him a dedicated online fanbase. His debut even won three Bookstagram awards, facilitating easier connections with potential readers. He now has a strong readership, reviews books, and actively interacts with his audience.
He believes this engagement helps him promote his own books, particularly crucial without the backing of a large publisher. LincsOnline met Russell at Spalding library where he read from his book and answered questions. Many people attended the event, eager to learn about his writing process.
Interestingly, he wrote the initial draft before the Covid-19 pandemic but had to rewrite it later due to outdated technology. Although his current focus is attracting new readers, this book stands alone, unlike his Britannia series. Even so, readers are already expressing their desire for a sequel to The Hero Virus.
He explains that it’s a pandemic people want to experience and that people want this virus. He also highlights how social media heightens its relevance, given that people generally want to be special, even taking shortcuts with risks to their lives.
Currently, he’s dedicated to the Britannia series once more, with book two nearing completion. He also possesses drafts for books three through seven, and the final book is in progress as well. The Hero Virus, published by The Conrad Press, is available for £10.99.
