The Porthywaen Silver Band has a new musical director. Steve Pritchard-Jones, also known as SPJ, got the job.

Steve said he feels happy about it; the band means a lot to him. He started his music there in 1975, and it feels great to return and work with them now. He wants to build on their history.

He also directs the West Midlands Police Brass Band. Steve looks forward to the upcoming opportunities; he wants to celebrate their musical tradition. This band is important to the community.

Steve started with brass at eight years old and has become successful. Now, he is a conductor, performer, and teacher. He even judges brass bands.

He studied music in Liverpool and London. He now works across the UK and even abroad. Steve has led several brass bands before now, including Tredegar Town Band, Cwmaman Band, and Point of Ayr Band.

Steve also judges local and national contests. He trained with the Welsh Regional Council and got a diploma in brass band judging in 2006. This came from NABBC and Salford University.

Steve dedicated time to music education. He directed the North Powys County Youth Band for ten years. Also, he worked part-time at Shropshire Music Service and led a school where art helped students thrive.

Kris Davies is the band chairman. He said he’s very happy Steve joined. Steve brought energy to their rehearsals, balancing work and fun while giving players guidance and praise. Kris is excited about the future.

The band meets at John Pugh’s Band Hall.
