Hey, so something interesting happened. The government won’t check street lights for women’s safety. A local council wanted them to look at the lights. They think more lights could help women feel safer.

The council, NMDDC, heard a proposal about this issue. A council member, Doire Finn, suggested working together and finding places needing more lights. She mentioned women feeling unsafe walking at night.

Finn highlighted poor lighting in areas like Heather Park and Kilmorey Park. Another council member added that Mournes also had problems, with many street lights missing.

Someone asked the DfI Minister, Liz Kimmins, about these concerns. The DfI responded that no street lights were turned off recently. They also stated a lack of resources for a study to check all roads without lights.

The DfI mentioned that the council is responsible for park lighting. Therefore, the DfI is not going to participate in the proposed checks.
