Spring might inspire you to try a new hobby. Creative writing courses are at the Sub Rooms, while Hawkwood has basket weaving and Pegasus offers collage in Brimscombe.

Anna Giangiordano teaches creative writing for nine weeks at the Sub Rooms. The course is for beginners, teaching them how to plan, write, and edit, building writing confidence. They offer a supportive space to try, with homework to practice skills.

Sam Mukumba, a Ugandan artist based in the UK, has a show at SVA’s John Street Gallery. His exhibition, Fragile Lives, depicts refugee experiences. The Arts Council funded his project. He uses glass, carbon, and ceramics to raise awareness, showing human fragility and nature’s resilience.

SVA hosts a film premiere for Stroud Film Festival. Still Out is by Rufus Exton, a collaboration with Will Cookson and Tom Haverly. Expect ambient sounds and landscapes as it explores the transience of time. A Q&A with the filmmakers follows.

Amy Cox, a local forager, teaches basket weaving in a day-long course. Participants learn to prepare and weave rush, using foraged fibers like carex. People use ancient techniques such as cordage and plaiting to weave a rush pouch to take home.

Helen Norman, a Gloucestershire specialist, teaches collage. This is a day-long deep dive where you can express yourself through collage. Use only newsprint and magazines as she guides you through the process. Create your own collage impression.

There’s a ‘Market Ride’ this month from Brimscombe Mill to Stroud market. This celebrates International Women’s Day. Wear suffragette costumes while music from female artists plays. Meet at 10 John Street at 10:15 am, with the group leaving at 11:30 am.

Stroud Sisterhood hosts a special week marking International Women’s Day. The theme is Weaving Together, with the aim to create collaborative pieces. Expect crafts and weaving, along with drumming, meditation, and yoga.

The Wilson in Cheltenham hosts late openings the first Wednesday monthly. Entry is free with performances open to all. Loz Apperly has a workshop at 6:30 pm. There is open mic poetry too. Try Bleephaus, the sound playground, or see The Cheltenham Improvisers Orchestra perform.
