Survey Work at Swindon Abbey Stadium Fuels Demolition Concerns

A new stand faces the B4534 road. Fences block access right now. Swindon Speedway hasn’t raced since 2019’s title win. It’s unclear if the stadium will host it again. Fans fear demolition for more homes. Brunel Surveys staff checked the drains on Friday.

They also mapped underground utilities. They wore bright vests. A worker said he didn’t know the full survey purpose. He mentioned similar work before new housing went in. He said something was going to happen. He pointed to roads ending at the fence.

He didn’t know when. Years ago, they considered moving the stadium. He said building houses happened instead. Losing Speedway was a shame, he thought. The new residents may not want Speedway nearby. He felt nobody knows what happens next.

Staff learned the survey was for new housing that day. Last November, fans accused Gaming International of deception. They wanted the council to enforce stadium rebuild milestones. The council said it couldn’t. Swindon Needs Speedway tried to protect the track last month.

They hoped to stop redevelopment. Their bid failed. The news outlet asked Gaming International’s Clarke Osborne for his comment. They plan a new complex at Studley Grange. Swindon Motorsports wants to bring back Speedway.

Gaming International and Swindon Speedway Ltd are partners. They will apply to the local authorities soon. Plans are underway to detail a speedway track and infrastructure. They want kart racing for fun and competition.

A multi-use arena is listed with capacity up to 3,000. Refreshments and recreation are also in the plan. Themed retail and food outlets may also be included. They also want a business complex for motorsport startups. It will have office, workshop, and meeting space. They want to reuse an old farm building too.
