Fisherman Place received a low rating in early 2024 after Swindon Council gave it one out of five stars, stating that significant improvements were urgently needed. The inspection took place three months before the rating was given.

According to the old owner, the shop was very busy during the inspection period. At the end of each day, they cleaned fish off the walls. A few weeks later, a new owner took over the store, renaming it Fisherman Isle.

The current staff dedicated themselves to improving the store’s cleanliness and safety. They implemented hot water and repaired the freezers to improve basic sanitation.

To prevent blood from splashing on customers, the fish cutting area was moved to the back of the shop. The change makes the shop safer for people.

Haief Mohammed now manages the fish shop under the supervision of his uncle, Hameed. Haief, formerly a chef in Saudi Arabia, later moved to Swindon.

Haief described the store’s initial setup as “very different.” They repaired the ceiling and the floor. New lights and displays were installed, resulting in substantial renovations.

Haief noted that the temperature control was inadequate before the changes. The broken freezer unit was removed, and a new fridge was installed, ensuring the shop maintains proper temperature.

He also described the shop’s prior unsanitary state, including foul odors, a dirty back area, and a lack of both staff uniforms and hot water.

The previous cutting area was deemed unhygienic due to frequent blood splashes near customers. Moving it was essential for food safety compliance.

The store receives shipments of fresh fish from Sri Lanka twice weekly, specifically every Monday and Thursday; this equates to 500 kg per week.

They offer a wide variety of fish, including sea bass, sea bream, and salmon. Shrimp and squid are also available, inaddition to a wide range of products.

Haief reported increased customer satisfaction and sales since the changes. Customer feedback to the changes has been encouraging. A new rating is pending, and the council expressed their happiness during a recent visit.
