Six Swindon pubs remain empty after closures. They seek new tenants, face redevelopment, or await future plans.

Here are six pubs standing empty in Swindon, though plans exist for their future use.
The Boundary House, one of Arkell’s oldest pubs, closed in 2022. It was located on The Street in Moredon and was built before 1861. The Slade family owned it until 1877, after which Arkells took ownership. The pub closed on February 15, 2022, and Arkells is currently seeking new tenants.
The Duke of Edinburgh, on Cricklade Road, served beer for over 150 years before closing in March 2022. The pandemic contributed to the publican leaving. Permission to change it to flats was granted in September 2024.
The Crumpled Horn, in Eldene, opened in 1975 and has faced numerous challenges. It closed in 2019, and Admiral Taverns took over in 2020, bringing in new leaseholders. Those tenants left in 2022, and new people took over in November, but police closed it for six weeks in 2023 after men with machetes entered it. The council subsequently removed the landlady, and the pub is now boarded up and empty, but available to lease.
The Cross Keys, in Wanborough, has had many landlords. Adam and Sonja Travers reopened it in 2024, but it closed again in January 2025. Wadworth cited “unforeseen circumstances,” and they are now looking for new tenants. Notably, the pub was improved before its most recent closure.
The New Inn, located in Stratton St Margaret, closed in December 2024. The pub had been struggling and losing a significant amount of money. Despite being a PubAid award finalist, they are still actively trying to find a new landlord.
The Check Inn, in Wroughton, was managed by Fuller’s until it closed in April 2022. Fuller’s searched for a new tenant, but finding one proved difficult. Currently, planning permission exists to build houses on the site, with Woodview Estates planning to construct five houses.
