An Indian takeaway was fined for selling sheep meat mislabeled as ostrich meat in a curry dish.

Abdul Malik Ali admitted his guilt in court. His company, Amalik Cafe Ltd, also faced charges. This happened at York Magistrates’ Court. The charges involved violating the Food Safety Act.
Ali managed Jaipur Spice in December 2023. His restaurant was located at the Busby Stoop Inn. Trading standards officers from the council visited and purchased the curry.
The officers tested the “ostrich” curry. The results showed sheep meat, not ostrich. Ali stated a chef used wrong meat by accident. This chef was only working there temporarily.
Ali received a £237 fine. He must also pay £400 in costs, in addition to a £95 victim surcharge.
Amalik Cafe Ltd received a £120 fine. The company needs to pay £672 in costs, plus a £48 victim surcharge.
Councillor Greg White spoke regarding food fraud. He stated customers deserve honest food labeling and they will act against deceiving producers. He wants people to get what they pay for.
