Lee Moise, aged 38, got caught at a Tesco Express. He was at the Leytonstone store on High Road. This happened around 4 PM on January 7th. Tesco staff stopped him.

CCTV showed Moise trying to steal lots of alcohol. The police came and took Moise into custody. They learned he stole from that Tesco nine other times. He also assaulted a staff member there. He stole once from a Co-op store too. This Co-op was on Homerton High Street.

Two days later, Moise admitted to ten thefts and pleaded guilty to the assault. At Thames Magistrates’ Court, he got a one-year jail sentence, suspended for eighteen months.

Inspector Uddin talked about shoplifting’s impact, saying it hurts businesses and staff. He highlighted their commitment to justice and focus on crimes impacting Londoners most. Safer Neighbourhood Teams work with local stores, using crime prevention methods effectively.

Police make arrest inquiries often and talk to the council about shoplifters. The council’s CCTV helps identify them. Police also work with homeless outreach teams who help people who shoplift often, as it often funds their drug habits.

Targeted approaches are changing London communities. In Homerton, police made fifteen arrests related to over fifty shoplifting crimes since September 2024. Six people are now serving time in prison.

A Tesco representative thanked the police and their own security team for working together well on the case. Tesco is working with the Metropolitan Police to keep stores safe for all. The High Road Leytonstone Express is one store.
