TfL assists in probing a 4,000-liter diesel leak into the River Wandle, impacting wildlife and prompting urgent cleanup efforts.

Around 4,000 liters of diesel leaked into the River Wandle. The spill entered the drainage system first, then flowed into the river itself. An expert thinks wildlife will suffer for years, and conservation efforts may be undone.
TfL says bus services won’t be affected, as buses can refuel elsewhere during the probe. TfL is sending help from their Safety, Health, and Environment teams. The Engineering Team is also there to help.
TfL said they shared findings with other companies to prevent similar events happening again. TfL knows pollution is a big deal and will help fight river pollution, including that caused by roads and the vehicle fleet.
A river expert, Dr. Jack Hogan, spoke about the spill’s impact, and he thinks it’s the worst spill since 2007. He said the damage could last for years, but we won’t know the full extent yet.
