Hoopers, a Torquay fixture since 1978, began as a small menswear shop emphasizing quality and stylish fashion brands.

Hoopers officially opened June 10, 1982, but it started in 1978 on Fleet Street. It began as a small, specialized store, aiming for customers wanting quality and style. Barry and Jane Hooper owned the store, seeing a need for high-end menswear in the Westcountry market.
In 1978, they bought a tiny sweet shop, only 18 by 18 feet. They sold the shop’s fittings and redecorated themselves, reopening it three weeks later. The shop became an instant success, and soon, expansion became an option.
In 1980, they moved to 16 Fleet Street, a shop three times bigger than the previous location. They then introduced ladies’ fashion.
In 1981, two London customers visited. David Thompson and his wife spoke with Barry, who shared his vision of buying Williams & Cox, a nearby store that was available, to create a bigger Hoopers store.
That evening, they made a decision to purchase Williams & Cox and transform it into Hoopers. Today, Hoopers offers luxury fashion, beauty products, and accessories.
Locals shared memories of the store. Mark Hore commented on its success and longevity. Kim Qureshi remembered attending a fashion show. Michael Mudge recalled working on the refit. Iain Tucker noted its family business history. Sue Clarke missed both stores: Hoopers and Williams & Cox.
