A study suggests building homes on various Dumfries sites, including the old cinema and Debenhams, to boost town growth.

Three Sixty Architects did the study last year. The local council asked them to do it. The study suggests building many types of housing. They thought ‘Later Living’ places would be good, and student homes would also work well.
The report is on the council’s website now. Empty upper floors could become homes, which would protect the town’s look. More people living downtown can then help it thrive.
Sixteen locations could hold 219 homes. These include the old cinema, Debenhams, and car parks on Charlotte and George Street. The Scottish Power site is also on the list, though not all sites might be suitable.
Another 121 homes could fit elsewhere. The old Linen Bank, County House, and a furniture store might work. So could the former School of Art, located on George Street.
Experts also suggest repurposing existing buildings. They could add homes, mostly on upper levels. Some upper level conversions could create 39 homes on locations such as Church Crescent and the High Street.
