A former pub will soon be a house. The Brown Jug was once a farm cottage which became a pub in 1795. For centuries, people gathered there, in Broadstairs, but it shut down in December 2019. It has been empty ever since.

Tracey Emin bought the place in 2021. She is a well-known artist from Margate, with the property between Ramsgate and Broadstairs. She wants to turn it into a home and asked for permission in June 2023.

Her project will change the property a lot which is 921 square meters and across from a car dealership. The council gave her the go-ahead even though the building is listed as Grade II, it will become a two-bedroom house.

Pegasus Group helped Emin with the plans, stating the pub is falling apart and the project will fix it up nicely. They will install new windows and doors. New bathrooms and a kitchen are also planned.

The outside walls will stay as they are, along with floors, ceilings, and roof. Company states the old fireplaces will remain and even the original bar will stay sharing the info in planning papers. They say the pub isn’t very useful.

Other pubs exist nearby in the town centres and serve the same area. Closing this pub won’t hurt the community because similar places are nearby and easy to reach. This car park has six spaces which will remain and lacks central heating.

The basement will hold bikes and storage. The garden behind the building will get fixed up. The pub was first called The Queen’s Arms Tap however, the name “The Brown Jug” showed up in 1813 during an auction.

Two sisters, Jenny and Myrna, ran the bar in the 1960s but Myrna died 15 years ago. Jenny kept running the pub on her own. Health problems forced her to close it over five years ago.

Some locals are not happy, wanting the pub to stay open and be a good meeting place again. One resident remembers the pub fondly, going there with family as a child.

Another person said it is building with local importance and should stay open for everyone. They think it could create local jobs, and would also sell local products. They see it as a community asset.

Emin is known for many different art forms including drawings, paintings, and films. She also is a sculptor and photographer. She is a member of a British artist group, and has been nominated for the Turner Prize. She belongs to the Royal Academy of Art.
