Major delays hit Newport due to gas pipe work. Traffic lights caused gridlock, sparking driver frustration. Now resolved.

Some people were not happy. They said they were stuck, waiting over ten minutes at the Malpas Interchange roundabout.
The traffic affected many people. Drivers traveling between Bettws, Malpas, and Newport were impacted, as was the A4051, which goes to and from Newport.
The traffic lights made things worse at rush hour, and the lights messed with traffic flow. Two big roundabouts in Newport were affected: the Malpas Interchange, which connects to the M4, and is used to get to Bristol and Cardiff.
Traffic backed up onto another area near the Shaftesbury roundabout, which is close to a new Farmfoods store in Newport. One driver called the traffic “total carnage”.
Good news, though! The lights were taken away on Saturday, March 1st, so traffic should be back to normal now.
Wales & West Utilities spoke about the work. Their Programme Controller, Andrew Coleman, said they upgraded Newport’s gas network in the Brynglas Road area.
This work was very important because it keeps gas flowing safely to homes and businesses. The upgrade will help transport greener gas too, ensuring the gas network will be ready.
They agreed to do the work during half-term with Newport City Council, wanting to cause the least disruption. February 24th was the start date.
Traffic lights kept people safe during the work at the Malpas Road and Brynglas Road junction. They took these lights away March 1st.
They apologized for any disruption, saying the work was crucial. It keeps gas flowing, prepares the network and ensuring it will be fit for the future.
