Next week, the council will discuss council tax. They might decrease the planned increase by one percent. The council’s budget initially proposed a 6.9% tax increase. The new proposal is a 5.9% increase, if approved. All councillors will debate the draft in March.

The change follows resident feedback and more funds. The Welsh Government changed funding for local councils. Councils will get at least 3.8% more money than last year. This means Vale of Glamorgan Council gets £1.1 million extra.

Council Leader Lis Burnett voiced concerns about the original funding. She noted the Vale received less than other areas in Wales. Burnett is pleased the funding will increase, going from 3.3% to 3.8% for the Vale Council.

Burnett felt uncomfortable with the initially high tax increase. The extra money allows them to lower it. Addressing resident concerns is important because people worried about the original tax hike.

The council faces financial issues despite the new money. They still have a deficit of almost £9 million, so they need significant savings to balance the budget. Schools and social care get 71% of budget funds.

Spending on schools increases by £8.647 million. Also, social care funding goes up by £10.243 million. Burnett mentions years of tight finances, but notes that they still deliver good services, though.

Investment in social care reduced hospital discharge delays. The Vale has the fewest delays in Wales. Home care access averages three days. School investments provide modern facilities to students so pupils who need support can access excellent resources.
