Wells City Council takes control of green spaces to protect local services & save Somerset council money.

Several towns agreed to these deals already. Bridgwater, Minehead, and others got more control, and they now manage parks and green spaces.
Wells City Council made a deal, too. They will manage green spaces and play areas starting on June 1st. They will look after many specific locations, including Balch Road Allotments, Barnard Court, and Bignal Rand play area.
Black Dog Gardens also transfer, and many others are on the list as well. Wells City Council will oversee some cemeteries, including Cathedral Green. Mendip Hospital cemetery and St. Cuthbert’s Cemetery also change hands.
The city council will also handle street cleaning. Since they already handle Union Street toilets, the deal expands their responsibilities. This saves Somerset Council money each year, as Wells City Council will pay for the services using their share of council tax.
Chris Hall spoke about the council’s efforts, saying talks with Wells were productive. They aimed to protect local services.
Future changes require separate approvals later. The councils may shift more services in time, deciding this in the future.
Wells wanted to manage the local market. This needs a broader discussion, involving other towns in the Mendip area.
Somerset Council will finalize their budget soon. The meeting is in Bridgwater this March, where they will decide on spending.
