People in Beaconsfield are mad about a new Wetherspoons. They think it doesn’t fit their posh town. The old cinema sat empty for four years, leaving locals wondering what would open there.

Some wanted a Côte restaurant; others dreamed of an Ivy or a bigger M&S. Wetherspoons announced its plans in April 2024. The pub will be in the old Prezzo on Station Road.

Locals were very upset by the news. One resident doesn’t want pints served at 9 am. He said he’s traditional and likes the town as it is, while a couple said they wouldn’t go to Wetherspoons.

A woman called the chain “cheap” and “boring,” explaining she moved to the country to escape city life and doesn’t want that kind of business near young people. She wrote to the council but got no reply.

Her friend thinks big companies are pushing people out. A woman across the road agreed, stating that Wetherspoons doesn’t suit the area and she would prefer an Ivy restaurant.

She fears it will bring the “wrong type” of people. Another local worries about broken bottles. One woman thinks it will attract the old Revs crowd, adding that she hoped for a bigger M&S instead.

She thinks Wetherspoons is not right for Beaconsfield. Someone else said people in Wetherspoons look gloomy, adding that cheap food is their brand. Another person admitted he sounded snooty.

One local said an affordable restaurant isn’t needed and questioned who would benefit from it. He also noted that people resist change. He highlighted the town’s art galleries, fancy shops, and history of celebrity residents.

One woman thinks Wetherspoons has a certain image and fears the town will lose its unique character. Some residents think there will always be mixed opinions.

Another person said the town is dead and also states you can’t get a good pint anywhere. One man remarked about the snobbishness surrounding Wetherspoons, asserting that he’d rather have something than nothing.

A resident of 17 years dislikes the food and would prefer a Lakeland or Toby Carvery. She thinks Beaconsfield is losing its charm, claiming it used to be nicer and some stores have disappeared.

The mayor wanted a restaurant or cinema. He welcomes Wetherspoons, with conditions, emphasizing the need to respect the location’s history. He was sad when Prezzo shut down.

The mayor thinks a cinema would be great and that empty storefronts are bad for Beaconsfield. He hopes work starts soon and looks forward to a pint there someday.
